This year’s SDPBRN symposium was a collaborative affair with NES CPD team and Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme (SDCEP). Taking place at the West Park Conference Centre on Friday, 13 November 2015 the event had a fantastic attendance with 182 delegates from all over Scotland. The theme of the day was Drug Therapies in General Dentistry – Clinical Conundrums.
The day was introduced by Professor Jan Clarkson (SDPBRN/SDCEP) and the morning presentations began with Dr Trevor Johnson (Cochrane Oral Health Group, NHS Health Education Yorkshire & the Humber) who discussed the current debate around pharmacology in relation to endocarditis; Dr Michele West (SDCEP) presenting on the development of the new Anticoagulant guidance; Mrs Patricia Green (Patient Representative on the Anticoagulant Guidance Development Group) describing her experience of warfarin therapy and self-testing; Dr Clare Marney (NHS Tayside) who shared the implications for the General Dental Practitioner of SDCEP’s Anticoagulant guidance.
After a welcomed lunch the afternoon session saw short presentations from the Scottish Dental Postgraduate Fellowship followed by the parallel sessions. We saw Dr Marney again who ran one of the two sessions on Managing the dental patient with medical problems and Mr Douglas Kennedy (Ninewells Hospital & Medical School) who ran the alternative session, Does referral to secondary care for patients on bisphosphonates or anticoagulants help? The final presenter of the day was Professor Bruce Guthrie (NHS Fife) who spoke about the consequences of prescription errors. The day was closed by Mrs Gillian Nevin (NES) and it was agreed that it was a most successful event.
