Evaluating Undergraduate Education Study


Since 2005, SDPBRN, in collaboration with Scotland’s Dental Schools, conducted an annual survey of final year dental undergraduate students to evaluated student outcomes from undergraduate dental education.

The aims were to:

  • evaluate student outcomes from undergraduate dental education in terms of their:
    – clinical and professional practice and decision making;
    – attitudes and beliefs influencing their decisions;
  • evaluate students’ self-reported practice and associated beliefs in relation to the revised General Dental Council (GDC) learning outcomes Preparing for practice: Dental team learning outcomes for registration (2012);
  • inform the future development of the undergraduate dental education curriculum;
  • provide useful baseline information for future studies that relate to workforce issues and the provision of dental care in Scotland.

Outcomes were reported to the Schools  each year and contributed to quality assurance of undergraduate dental education and curriculum development. In the 2014-2015 academic year, the survey focused on hygiene-therapy undergraduate education in the Universities of Dundee, Edinburgh and Highlands and Islands and Glasgow Caledonian University.
