Practice Development Plan Pilot Evaluation
Responding to the SEHD 2005 Dental Action Plan Initiative a brief was given to the Regional Dental Postgraduate Centres in Scotland to implement practice development plans (PDP). A pilot phase commenced in May 2007 and ran until October 2007. Following the start of the PDP pilot the Scottish Dental Practice Based Research Network was requested to oversee the evaluation.

UK VDP Cohort Study
In Scotland, a mandatory formal system of assessment is part of the dental vocational training year. This study has involved evaluating the effects of this assessment on the acquisition of competence and standards during training by comparison with training in other areas of the U.K. where formal assessment is not employed.

The ERUPT Study
This study1 investigated the effectiveness of implementation strategies based on remuneration and training in evidence-based healthcare for a preventive treatment for which there is evidence of effectiveness but no direct remuneration for dentists supplying the treatment.

Preformed metal crowns for the management of deciduous caries
Following a successful pilot trial the same team of practitioners and researchers have now completed a full-scale clinical randomised controlled trial. The results of which have now been published2 and a manual describing the procedure ( The Hall Technique) is now available.

Risk Assessment for People with Learning Disabilities:
This collaboration between researchers and dental professionals aims to investigate the current practice in oral health risk assessment in Scotland and perceptions of best practice. The findings will enable the development and validation of a standard assessment strategy.
